“How to Talk So They Will Listen” – Communication Skills for Parents and Teens

Teens With Parents

PCS-Counseling has partnered with Ward Church for a one time seminar focused on helping both teens and parents learn “How to Talk so They Will Listen”. The session will focus on helping both teens and parents to understand the problems they are facing in their relationships with each other and to improve their communication skills to address these issues.

The seminar will be held in an innovative format, in which parents and teens will begin by splitting off into separate groups with two different facilitators. Laura Dyas, LBSW, LPC, MA will facilitate the parents group, and will help parents to reach insight on current issues in their families, how to address them, and what skills they can use to improve communication with their teens to reach their desired outcomes. Matt Swartz, LLMSW, will lead teens in understanding what’s going wrong when they are dealing with their parents, learn how they can change it, and gain skills for increasing communication and getting what they want more often.

After 50 minutes in separate groups, everyone will join together to discuss what they learned and how they can improve  their relationships and communication at home. To close the seminar, participants will be given the chance to make a commitment to each other regarding changes they will make to improve their relationship and communication issues at home. The commitment ceremony will be held by Laura, Matt, and Dr. John Mlinarcik, Ph.D., LMSW to allow families the chance to cement their learning in a comfortable and intimate way.

The session will be held at Ward Church, Sunday January 11th, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM during normal High School Ministry hours in room A113. For those who are secular and would prefer to not attend the worship portion, the seminar will begin at 7:00 PM.
